HEARING SCREENING IN NORMAL BIRTH WEIGHT INFANTS WITH HYPERBILIRUBINEMIA

Abstact :

Background: Hyperbilirubinemia is a frequentl problem in neonatal periods, may result in neurodevelopment and hearing impairment. Hearing function disorders were detected in 87% of the neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, ranging from total deafness to normal, including unilateral and bilateral deafness. 

Objective : to evaluate hearing in normal birth weight infants with hyperbilirubinemia

Methods: This is cross sectional study in infants admitted at Intermediate Ward Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya during May until November 2010. TEOAE was performed in infants with hyperbilirubinemia (bilirubin level > 5 mg/dL) dan birth body weight > 2500 g at Audiotory Outpatient Clinic Soetomo Hospital.

Results: There were 23 infants with hyperbilirubinemia who underwent TEOAE. There were 13 (56.5%) with reffer TEOAE. There was 7 (53.8%) male and 6 (46.2%) female infants with reffer TEOAE. Ratio 1:1.12 . Mean of bilirubin level was 11.94 ± 7.54 years and median was 9.3 years.  In group bilirubin level 5-14 mg/dL, there were 20 (87%) infants, 12 (60%) infant with reffer TEOAE and 8 (40%) infants with normal result, one at bilirubin level 15-23 mg/dL with normal TEOAE, one at bilirubin level 24-33 mg/dL with absent TEOAE and one with highest level bilirubin was 37.9 mg/dL with normal TEOAE.

Conclusion: More than half infants with normal birth weight and hyperbilirubinemia have abnormal result on hearing screening.
