Back Ground The incidence of BCC has been increasing rapidly world wide. Indonesia is a tropical country with high Ultra Violet (UV) exposure. Normally, DNA damage in the epidermis due to UV is deleted by apoptosis to prevent the generation of cancer. It has been suggested that a deficient apoptotic mechanism may predispose individuals to skin cancer. Several studies show the role of p53, Bax and Bcl-2 that influence apoptosis in BCC, but no data exist yet in Indonesian patients with BCC. Objective To compare the expression of p53, Bax and Bcl-2 between BCC patients and normal skin controle. Methods A collection of 20 cases of BCC and five sample normal skin controle were performed immunohistochemistry examination. Mann Withney analysis was used to compare the expression of p53, Bax and Bcl-2 between two groups. Results There is significant difference expression of p53, Bax and Bcl-2 between two groups (p < 0.05) Conclusion p53, Bax and Bcl-2 play a role in Indonesian patients with BCC. It seems the disturbance of apoptotic process due to ultra violet radiation influence the pathogenesis of BCC in Indonesian patients. The further molecular studies required to establish this finding.
